There has been rumors that there will be a new season for Haruhi Suzumiya but according to the latest issue of Japan's Newtype Magazine, it wouldn't be a sequel of the first but a whole new series. One of the reason why they are going to make a different series of Haruhi Suzumiya is because the production crew finds it hard to continue the plot from the first season. Despite that, the characters would probably still remain the same. The release date is still not confirmed.

Actually, Season 2 is not so much a ‘new series’, as it is a reinterpretation of the Disappearance arc to portray season 2 as a new series where Haruhi wasn’t at north high.
(if you read the novels, Kyon was transported to a world where Haruhi was missing. it turned out to be that it was an alternate timeline where she went to a different high school)
Following that, KyoANi may intend to portray that timeline as an 'alternate series'.
Also, it’s more likely they’ll retain the same haphazard episode order, because they’re also covering the time when Kyon went back to meet the young Haruhi.
Besides, it is the haphazard order that made Haruhi succeed. AMongst other things.
